Now that college football is ramping up and my Virginia Tech Hokies happened to win their past due season opener over the weekend, I was on the hunt to soak in all the post-victory Virginia Tech football talk. I downloaded and listened to my regular VT program, Tech Sideline Podcast, as well as the Sons of Saturday Podcast, and then wondered if my favorite team got any coverage on a national level. I figured that winning a football game without 23 players and a few coaches due to COVID would merit some national exposure.
Enter the Solid Verbal Podcast. Started by one of the more renowned sports bloggers of recent memory, Ty Hildenbrandt and Dan Rubenstein cover the college football scene on a national level on a long running podcast. I’ve listened to a couple episodes previously, and figured I’d check it out this week.
The two hosts operate from different locations: Allentown, PA and Chicago. Personalities are not abrasive, though a little bland. Mood stays light. Chemistry is decent enough. I suppose the appeal of The Solid Verbal is for the content. Their recall and knowledge of however many dozens of random college football players across the country is impressive.

Not surprisingly, given the apparent focus on the glamour conferences (B1G, SEC), my Hokies got a half-sentence worth of coverage. I guess VT will have to keep winning and knock off heavyweight programs to get any real run.
Nevertheless, The Solid Verbal is what I remember of it: solid. I’ll check them out again down the road if my Hokies ever do anything special this season. Maybe they’ll even get a full sentence of coverage on The Solid Verbal.
